How to Take Apart a Sofa for Moving – Expert Tips from the Pros

A complete guide on how to take apart a sofa for moving

Moving is a stressful time for everyone, but it doesn’t have to be so hard. One of the best ways to make your move easier is by taking apart your furniture before you start loading up the truck or moving van. This post from our blog provides expert tips on how to take apart a sofa for moving, as well as other household items that are large and difficult to transport.

How Long Will It Take To Take Apart Your Sofa?

It will take the average person anywhere from four to six hours, depending on how many people are involved and how long it takes each of them to work. This time can vary significantly, though. One mover needed only 40 minutes while another took 11 hours for a similar project.

Tools You Will Need To Take Apart Your Sofa:

  • pair of heavy-duty scissors
  • tape measure
  • screwdriver or drill with a Phillips head attachment (depending on the type of screws holding your couch together)
  • safety mask and goggles for cutting plastic pieces

How To Take Apart Your Sofa For Moving:

Step One: Remove all upholstery

The first step is to remove all upholstery from the frame. This includes cushions, pillows, arm covers, and any other fabric parts that are glued in place. It’s best if you leave these items for last when packing because they will be damaged by boxes pressing against them during transport. We recommend placing them into zip lock bags before loading them onto your moving van as well so nothing gets lost in transit.

Step Two: Remove The Arms From Couch

The next step is to remove the arms from your couch. Use a Phillips head screwdriver and unscrew all of the screws holding together each arm piece (there will be two per side). If you are having trouble removing them, try lifting up on one end as this should help unhook it. After you’ve removed both arms, set them aside where they won’t get lost or soiled until later in the process.

Step Three: Remove The Frame From The Seat Itself

The next step is to remove the frame from the seat itself. Using a Phillips head screwdriver, unscrew all of the screws holding together your couch’s frame and back support. These will often be attached via small metal tabs that can easily break so be careful not to force any buttons when removing them.

Once you’ve removed all six screws (three on each side), stand up your sofa upside down on its front side where it should now lift right off with ease! If it doesn’t come apart then make sure you have replaced loose or broken bolts during assembly. DON’T FORCE ANYTHING!

Step Four: Keep Any Upholstery or Cushions You Want to Reuse

This step is a bit self-explanatory since it’s pretty much the opposite of what you just did. You can keep any upholstery or cushions that are in good condition and reuse them on your new sofa to help with costs, which we’ll get into later.

Step Five: Dispose Of The Removed Upholstery Or Cushioning Materials

The last thing left to do is dispose of your old furniture materials! Unless they’re still in perfect shape, the best way to go about this is by taking them over to your local recycling center for proper disposal. In some areas, such as NYC, there are also specific pick-up days where you could take these items out for collection.

(Optional) Step 6: How to reuse old pillows and cushions

It’s not required, but if you’re feeling crafty or just want to make the most out of your old furniture materials and save some money in the process? You could try turning them into decorative pillows or cushions. This is a great idea for anyone who wants to give their couch a new look without having to buy anything expensive! The only catch is that this will take time- so it’s best if you plan ahead before starting on any projects like these .

A few other uses:

  • Pet bed
  • Pillow fort
  • Patio furniture cushioning
  • Floor pillows
